Today we’re going to talk about keto and calories. Do you count calories on keto? How many calories on keto should you do?

People are carrying around a lot more calories of fat than they may realize. Many people think they will lose weight just by cutting their calories. But, in reality, this doesn’t work.

Counting calories doesn’t really work because of these variables:

• Age

• Slow Thyroid

• Insulin Resistance

• Exercise

• Stress

• Sleep

• Dietary Fat vs. Body Fat Burning

• Body Problem (autoimmune problem, inflammatory condition, etc.)

• How Calories Influence Hormones

• How Many Times You’ve Dieted In The Past

• Speed of metabolism 

Instead of trying calorie counting, discover how many calories you need and how many times you should eat.

When you consume a meal, you should be satisfied and full without being uncomfortable. You don’t need to count calories on keto. You just need to aim for being satisfied. 

Action Steps:

• Start with healthy keto (shift to fat-burning)

Then, start working your way down this list if you need to as your body adapts.

2. Go down to two meals

If that doesn’t work, go to the next level:

Wish i had some more potential energy, i'm severely underweight and can eat 3-4000 calories a day before i feel satisfied, but i'm poor as hell and if i were to eat this much in a healthy diet it would cost me atleast 4 times my monthly budget for food :/

from 2019 October to the end of this past January I starved myself. I started eating again at the end of January but now I just want to eat. I would like to know if I have insulin resistance because I have had days where I have eaten something and I felt full but my mind still wanted to eat. Also I am more forgetful than ever. Do I have insulin resistance and Leptin resistance? Serious question. Someone please answer with a comment. It would be most appreciated.

One exception, water only fasting (total calorie restriction) and fasting mimicking diet (400c/day) calorie restriction will BOTH cause fat burning in all overweight people at some point. You naturally, at some point, will go into ketosis upon fasting. Total fasting does not immediately slow your metabolism down any appreciable amount until your body fat stores begin to to drop down into the 10% range. So TOTAL calorie restriction DOES work for burning excessive fat (and skin) whereas mild or moderate calorie restriction typically does not, and exercise with food intake will not burn excess skin like fasting will.

Dr. Berg could you PLEASE help me answer this question I have asked so many people: If you have two groups of randomly selected subjects, each group eats 200 calories below their BMR, one does keto and the other eats a standard healthy macro ratio. What quantifiable difference will I see in the numbers between keto and non keto? How much more will the keto group lose? Has anyone done this research?

I have been doing Atkins for 20 months with success; however, I still have a small amount of weight to lose and my weight loss and improvements in my blood sugars have slowed significantly. My A1C is 5.5, but I would like it to be just a little lower and to get off the Jardiance. I have now started 18/6 IF and hoping to kick start things again. I'm a 68 y/o female, so my metabolism is really slow. I'm only mildly overweight now at 175 for 5' 9 1/2". Hi Eric. Great videos. Thank you. One question: if you are down to one or even two meals per day, how can you get to your calories daily needs? Clean strict keto handled most of my physical woes. Alternate Day Fasting (ADF) and clean strict keto on eating days is the only way I can lose weight. Only when I got onto ADF I got rid of inflammation and stopped my glaucoma.

shouldn't have to worry about calories on keto. just eat when you're hungry which will be almost never when you're carrying a ton of fat. your body will be satiated 90 percent of the time and overeating usually leads to nausea on keto. Its self correcting for sure.

Calories DO matter.
Calorie Deficit is REQUIRED for fat loss.
Keto offers no weight loss advantage at the same calorie deficit.
Whatever diet you choose keeping track of the amount of food you are eating is vital.
I like Keto for the appetite control it gives me which makes it easy to eat 2 1200 calorie meals per day

This is all true, but I get my best results when maintain a negative daily caloric balance combined with a low carb diet. Any time I go above my BMR, even on Keto my weight loss stops.

I love you Dr Berg, but this video seems to contradict itself. On the one hand you say, “on Keto you don’t have to worry about counting calories.” But a couple of minutes later you say, “get to the place where you only have to eat one meal a day.” So which is it? Either Keto works or it doesn’t. If you’re asking people to eat 1-2 meals a day, by definition that’s restricting calories. So why not just do 1-2 meals a day but eat whatever I want? Such as some carbohydrates like rice and potatoes. I’m basically questioning whether or not Keto works if you’re telling people to restrict calories anyway through fasting.

What I think it's very important too address is the mental side of the whole thing. What I noticed when I finally started for serious with my weight loss (what Dr. Berg says works 100%) is that food stopped being a factor of ultimate pleasure. Instead, I seek pleasure in other things, activities and hobbies. Now that I am more fit, I can play tennis with my kids, go hiking, ride bike etc.

However it's so difficult to start because you have to give up the food pleasure but you got now replacement immediately. So there is a phase when everything seems frustrating. I would want to hear about the mental aspect from Dr Berg.

For me nothing really worked, until I came across Dr. Berg and Jason Fung (read invest code). When I reduced carbs, my hunger grew smaller and smaller. Suddenly I didn't want to eat breakfast, finally I noticed I was not already hungry for dinner. So I eat most days one healthy meal, without carbs and feel great. Sometimes it I am hungrier I eat two meals. But now my body tells me basically what to do. If you cut sugar and carbs, your body will be able to send you correct signals again. This is the secret.

Stay on it and don't give up!

Doc, just to confirm, if my BMR is around 1400 but with OMAD I’m already full with consuming around 600-700cals, will that be okay to do *long term*?? Cause that’s about half the BMR. If that doesn’t ruin my metabolism long term then I’m good to go

My resting heart rate is 38, +/-5. If I'm in the same room as someone eating a nice, juicy hamburger with a healthy slice of cheddar cheese, I gain a few ounces. It's called "second hand calories."

Mine says I’ve burned 3100 today.. I haven’t worked out today other than went for a 3km walk. Why is my calories burned so high?

I use to track my calories when dieting to lose weight but I never tracked my calories burned on my workouts... I just recently got an Apple Watch and I’m not sure wether if I should go off my exercise calories burned or total calories burned. What would you recommend?
